Cost of living is the first number every senior should know before moving or staying. This guide breaks down what it actually costs to live in Florida as a senior, from housing and homeowners insurance to healthcare and taxes, and how to build a realistic retirement budget.

Cost of living is the first number every senior should know before moving or staying. This guide breaks down what it actually costs to live in Florida as a senior, from housing and homeowners insurance to healthcare and taxes, and how to build a realistic retirement budget.

Wiz's tip

Budget for the two numbers most retirees underestimate: homeowners insurance and healthcare. Both have risen sharply in Florida, and both are easier to plan for than to absorb later.

Housing costs

Housing is the biggest line in any senior budget, and in Florida it varies widely by county. The Treasure Coast offers more home for the money, while Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade carry a premium for coastal and urban living.

Beyond the purchase price, seniors should budget for HOA or CDD fees in many communities, property taxes, and the higher cost of waterfront and condo insurance.

Insurance and taxes

Florida's homeowners insurance is among the highest in the nation, and it has risen sharply in recent years. Wind, flood, and condo insurance all add up, and some coastal properties carry mandatory flood coverage.

On the tax side, Florida's lack of a state income tax is a major win for retirees, and the homestead exemption reduces property tax on a primary residence. Budgeting both sides, the insurance reality and the tax advantage, gives an honest monthly number.

Healthcare and long-term care

Healthcare is the second number retirees most often underestimate. Medicare covers a lot, but premiums, copays, prescriptions, and especially long-term care can grow quickly. Around 70% of people turning 65 will need long-term care at some point.

Wiz connects the cost-of-living conversation to the care conversation, because the home and the care plan are part of one retirement budget.

Building your budget

A realistic senior budget starts with the true housing number, adds insurance, taxes, healthcare, and everyday living, then leaves room for the fun of Florida: the beach, the boat, the restaurants, the family visits.

Wiz helps retirees run the numbers for the specific home and community they are considering, so the budget is built on real data rather than a guess.
